Sara is also an activist in the areas of ecology, peace, social justice, women's issues, and family and intimate violence, using her work to support such organizations as the National Domestic Violence Hotline, the Nature Conservancy, the National Clearinghouse in Defense of Battered Women, SANE/Committee for a Sane Nuclear Policy, and countless others. In 1997, Steele became the first Artist-in-Residence at Friends Hospital, the oldest private psychiatric hospital in the nation. She has led workshops for women survivors of personal violence as part of USArtists for the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and in 1998 and 1999 organized a national juried show for artists with special needs.
Sara's work has appeared on hundreds of products and she has won many awards throughout her career. Her original paintings are included in numerous private and public collections. Her annual calendars have been continuously in print for 23 years and can be found in major bookstores or at www.sarasteele.com. In Bloom, a book of Sara's floral paintings, was published in 1994. Sara's work has been exhibited throughout the U.S. In 2000 she had a solo show in Spain, and she is currently working on a retrospective show at the Berman Museum in 2005 and a new book of her paintings.
Sara has an enduring interest in holistic health. She became interested in Taoist philosophy and Chinese language as a teenager, and studied Chinese calligraphy with Cecelia Chiang. She was introduced to acupuncture and Systems Energetics in the late 1980's and her interest in the subject continues to grow.
